When in third gear I hear a whirling noise coming from the center of the car (transmission) if I push in the clutch its gone, and all other gears sound fine..any thoughts?

Also I have a short shifter, if this is serious and needs dealership work, are they going to try to screw me on this?

its a soft whirl, sounds like a high speed gyro spinning on metal. If that makes sense. Took the car out again, and I couldn't hear it..but it was distinct after about an 1 1/2 hours of highway driving..pulling into work parking lot. Ill update tonight to see if I hear it after leaving work.
