Never dived, but did snorkeling around St. John. Was only a 20 minute, 5$ hydrofoil ferry ride between the 2 islands at the time (about 4 years ago i think)
I highly recommend it, the place is incredible.
Again this may be a bit dated, but there was a place where myself and 2 friends rented a small motor inflatable boat, 60$ all day, included cooler and ice, and map and instructions on the best spots. And there were plenty of them.
If swimming around vast schools of hordes of bright, multi colored fish in crystal clear, calm, pleasantly warm water on a beautiful island with friendly people and abundant alchohol isn't your thing, then you should probably avoid it, you might not like it much. If you think you could get into that kinda stuff, ehh...give it a shot. Its a way to pass a boring afternoon i guess.

Yes, with Saint Thomas Diving Club out of Bolongo Bay
There is no coral reef, although there is coral in the shallows. Pleanty of tarpon.
Good wreck diving, the Diving club sank a ship that's accessible from about 18' to
40' good for beginners. The wreck of the RMS Rhone lies in about 80"'+ for more
advanced divers - was used in the movie "the Deep."

Yes
My honeymoon was in the US Virgin Islands (6 years ago which is pre hurricane Hugo or Andrew or which ever big one hit them). Of course where you dive around the island will vary some with where you are staying on the island. I dived the are that is basically between St. Thomas and St John (We actually stayed on St. John and I'm sure if you go you will end up there at least once. In my humble opininion, St. John is the nicer - less developed/ touristy - of the islands because 90% of it is national park. There is, however, less nightlife etc on it. I enjoyed the diving. In general, there are some varied conditions and I saw some species that I haven't seen since. Of course, in the end any assessment really depends on where you ordinarly dive and what your expectations are. It is a typical carribean dive destination with the usual local twists. Like I said, I enjoyed diving there.
