the paper birch is my state tree and now my favorite tree too.....
a large hemlock lost it's top during the ice storm here in the north east taking out most of the limbs off a nearby maple. a 5 inch diameter birch next to my A4 caught all of this debris and kept it from hitting my car.

a guy I work with literally prepared for the end of the world.
Automated generator backups, chain saws, gasoline supplies, etc.
Across the street they lost power at his house. He never went down.

with a gen i could have pumped water....
but the pump is hard wired so it's not that simple and there isn't any snow. i have a gas stove so melting wouldn't have been a problem.
