My house is such that it's an L shaped raised ranch.. 2 bedrooms downstairs, primary living areas upstairs, where teh woodstove is in the far end of the L. We use a ceiling fan in the room where the stove is, it's got a 10 foot gabled ceiling. Not ideal really, but we can manage to heat the entire upstairs with it on all but the coldest days. Downstairs is 3/4 underground, so it stays reasonably warm even without the furnace running.

When I lived in NC ,if hurricane was coming we would fill the tub with water for flushing toilet or washing in sink and use the water heater water for cooking. Many people forget you've got 30+ gallons available there.

in the basement. so even without the fans it will heat the whole house adequately.
