I am helping my girlfriend with her '98 A4 2.8 Quattro. It is at the mechanic right now.

He said the transmission needs a new "valve body" which he estimates he can get for around $650.00 plus another $150.00 labor for the install.

Is this a fair price?

If not, does anyone know a good place to get one for a better price?

Also, the A/C keeps needing a recharge, and the mechanic said it might need a new "evaporator". He wouldn't even give me a price because he said it is so expensive she is better off just re-charging the A/C whenever it stops blowing cold.

Does this sound right?

Any information or advice would be really appreciated, especially regarding the transmission "valve body".
