Default Popping Sound

Hi All

Popping Audi Noise

Have an issue of the car making a popping sound when accelerating. Been to mechanic - check spark plugs and they were not wet.

The issue occurs during acceleration then goes away once at speed (RPM 2k+). It is much harder to produce when stationary - need to get to RPM 3k-4K and then only slight popping.

Fuel used is 91 Octane, have also put a fuel injector cleaner through it (mechanic did) and tried on 95 Octane - and also tried a hard drive as it normally just runs around town.

I have attached a file - with the sound it makes - you will hear some popping sounds on acceleration. With the windows up you cant hear it, but can with the windows down. No codes - so ECU not throwing anything up.

Any thoughts much appreciated. Car is a 2000 Audi A4 1.8

Cheers

Andrew

Inspect wires. Look under hood in darkness for sparks. Could be internal though.
Without any codes being thrown, you're stuck with repair by process of elimination.
If these are the original wires they probably need replacing anyway. The ignition system is under more stress during acceleration.

If you have a VCDS you can monitor the engine in real time. It shows each cylinder and whether it is misfiring and how often. Check out the RossTech on their website.

If the sound could be a mechanical clicking vs an electrical popping, the symptom of occurring under load and less so when cruising could indicate CV joints in an axle heading south. They all need replacing at some point.
