Problem
go to howthingswork.com and search manual transmission - Great info.
The shifter feel sure sucks if that's what you mean, but the tranny itself is rock solid. Esp. Quattro.
Some weak A4 points: Control arms, cylinder head, wet braking, etc.
Bulletproof stuff: 1.8t bottom end, drivetrain, body integrity.
Everything else falls in between - not great, not bad.
You don't have to pound the lever to shift quickly. I can shift like phucking Tinkerbell and still be quicker than someone who just swats at the stick. It's all about accuracy, smoothness, and proper rev matching.
Bringing Audi to Life for Audi Fans
Do NOT pound the stick into gear if it doesn't want to go naturally.
DO match the gas more carefully and it'll go faster on it's own.
Try this - try cruising to a red light in second, and try to shift into first. Hard as hell = no first gear syncro.
Now try the same thing, but give the car enough gas to let the car get into first easily as you push the stick forward. It'll go smoohtly if you match properly.
What you just demonstrated was what happens when you are doing normal shifting - if you don't properly match revs, and wait for the tranny to be ready to go, you're making the syncros take all the resistance that you proved was there in the first example.
Repetitive abuse like this will cause constant grinds and a tranny that looks like a grenade went off when it's opened up.
