U'd get a temporary lic. plate paper from DMV and u'd need to stick it on the windshield.

Default This is what we used to do: get a buddy to remove his back plate. Put it on the rear of new car. (M)

drive somewhat close to each other.

Other than that, looks like you'd need to let it sit for a day to get new plates from DMV and then go get it...

Default How far do you have to drive it? You should be able to...

..drive it home with the previous owner's plates, as long as you got the bill of sale with you. I seriously doubt any cop will give you trouble for that. Especially if the date on the bill of sale is the same as when you drive it. But exercise common sense - a single ferry drive home is fine, but don't abuse it. Once you get the car home, take the plates off and return them to the previous owner. And if the title is clear and you get it together with the car, you might as well drive the car directly to DMV instead of home and get your own plates that same day.
