Remote Entry

I just bought a 98 A4 about two weeks ago. The only remote that the guy had to give me was broken(it was stepped on). So I called the dealer to see what they could do for me, they told me 240, 140 for remote 100 for programming. thinking that that was a huge rip off for a 1 dollar piece of plastic and maybe 15 minutes worth of programming I called a local import motors store, they told me they couldnâ€¼sup>TM</sup>t do anything because Audi didnâ€¼sup>TM</sup>t allow others to make replacements for their system. I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem and if they had a better solution. And if I can't get an affordable replacement, is it a bad idea to replace the whole system?

I found a bunch for sale on ebay. how do i know which will be compatible and how hard is it to program?

I got a vag-com connector from Ebay and am using it with an older version of the software vag software. You can do the key programming with the version I am using(v.303-1), but if you're gonna buy new, make sure it works with recent versions of the software.
Follow the link and take a look at the key matching stuff. It sounds quite easy.

You need to match the FCC ID of your current remote. I'm not sure what it is...

But generally, remotes with three buttons (lock, unlock, and panic) are a sure bet with our cars. As far as programming goes, you don't need a VAG-COM to do it, but it does help sometimes.
