Reverse is HARD to push into gear???

Reverse is HARD to push into gear???
I have a '98QMT with a "push-down" feature to engage into reverse gear. I noticed this problem b4 I had a short shift installed.. it seems like it's really hard to push into reverse.. after I move the bar to the right and push the **** down.. any ideas??

it feels a little STIFFER when I push down FIRST..
.. it seems like it's easier to move the bar to the right.. THEN push down the know.. then engage.. (manual says to do it this way)

Thanks.. that actually helps.. but why?
I wonder why it's a bit easier after you push into 1st gear first, maybe it's just naturally a little stiffer when going to reverse
(short shift kit just amplifies it a little)
