Shudder in Reverse ONLY - Transmission Problem?
I'm very impressed with the expertise exhibited in the forums and hope that you can help me, a non-expert owner.
I have a 2000 A4 Sedan, Quattro, Auto w/Tiptronic, 94K mi. When the car is heated up - driven for 30 mins or more - and I go to put it in Reverse gear (i.e. to parallel park), the entire car shudders violently and then goes into Reverse.
It's been an intermittent problem for the last year, but seems to happen ONLY when the car is hot AND ONLY in Reverse gear - never in Drive.
I know this problem is difficult to diagnose with this brief explanation, but I was hoping one of you with a similar issue or some knowledge of how the transmission works would be able to assist me.
Thank you for your time.

Have you checked for any fault codes being store by the TCU? If there aren't any codes, it's possible the multifunction switch is failing. Though I've never heard of this problem.

Thanks for the reply. The "check engine" light has recently come on, but the problem had existed before the light came on. I will take it to my local mechanic to check the codes. What is the multifunction switch and is it an expensive repair?
