Default So exaclty what precipitated out of the G12 and coated this 30V tstat?

I'm sure that is why it failed open after 130K, right? It was uniformly coated but rubbing it with finger nail will get it to flake right off without any trouble at all. The G12 that came out this time and last time looked pretty good to me (shown in bucket below)? Anyway, new tstat working perfectly but just got me curious...

Any of the G12 that I've seen come out of this car has looked just like the stuff in the bucket here

Default You get that coating when the water level drops too low and changes the ratio

of coolant to water. Dexcool does the same thing and it gets very acidic and does that, eating away at everything. My water pump I replaced had that same coating on it.

A good, comprehensive flush takes care of that. I recommend you do that or replace your radiator. You'll probably see a good jump in cooling, heating performance, and oil temps.

Default I didn't when I refilled it but after talking with the parts guy at the Audi place I learned

that they just used regular old Missoula tap water. So for about 6 months I had G12 mixed with tap water in there. Pretty sure before that was the original coolant. Our water has tons of minerals in it too. Think in that short of time it could have happened?

Plus I've noticed this reddish sort of grainy sandish looking stuff looking at the stuff people have flushed out of their heater core. My friend in Bozeman described it to me too and seemed like the same stuff....

I don't even have an inkling of an issue with any of the above.

Default i get deposits like that in my house from my well water

It could be iron, manganese, or even clay. That is what we have in our water around here and it leaves a deposit that looks exactly like that. As such I always buy a gallon of distilled water for <$2 to mix with the G12.

Default Still might go down whether it was an issue or not. When I replaced my radiator,

before my temps were at 12 o'clock and after it is at the notch before 12 or in between. My oil temps went down a little bit also.

On my way home this weekend from the track, it was below the notch before 12. That is running pretty damn cool.
