stereo 101..i'd like to keep my stock HU and change the door speakers
basically i popped a couple of door speakers
but appearantly, i need adapters and amps to use aftermarket speakers,
so my question is what adapters, speakers and amps did you all use to keep the stock headunit?

that's not a problem
but you are still better off using an aftermarket amp to get some decent power to those speakers. I use the line level outputs from the amp, through an adapter that turns those line levels to RCA's into my amps. Not sure if the adapter is still out there, but it's made by bluapunkt (however you spell it)

i would recommend this setup...
For the front speakers...
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5791450445&category=14 941&tc=photo">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5791450445&cat egory=14941&tc=photo</a> -- Don't let the ebay price fool you, they're $340 retail.
or if you want something a lil better (it's worth the extra $50):
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5792297291&category=32 818&tc=photo">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5792297291&cat egory=32818&tc=photo</a>
And for the rear speakers:
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5792055326&category=32 818&tc=photo">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5792055326&cat egory=32818&tc=photo</a>
you will need an amp pushing around 100-120Watts @4ohms to 4channels.
going pricey, the Rockford Fosgate P8004 will hit. but you can pretty much choose any name brand and be safe (alpine, etc).

I'm using my stock head unit, and aftermarket amps. I used to work at a shop and the only amp I
would ever recommend for this is a zapco, simply because it uses symilink (16volt signal) some of the best amps on the market. At any rate, have a stereo shop do it, you'll be happier

there are other salvage yards out there
I recommended dads because they are reputable and offer great customer serviced IMO. Do a net search and find others if you want the cheaper way out. In terms of sound quality and long term happiness, I would spend the extra $$ and have a pro do it right. I did my own this time around and would go to a good shop if I were to do it all over again.

you might also want to check and see if it's the same part number for a passat speaker
when my fronts blew in my 2000, I found the same part at the VW dealer 25 bucks cheaper. Don't know about the 96 though.

if you're interested in replacing your stock speakers...
Here is my install. It's not hard to do if you do your homework.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2363504.phtml">https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2363504.phtml</a></li></ul>
