Default Stupid manual...

Hey all,

Just bought my 2000 A4TQM and am having a hard time shifting it into first and second when it is cold. I was going to start by putting synthetic oil/fluid in the trans, but the stinking owners manual doesn't say beans about what to use.

Does it use ATF or gear lube? What type or weight?

Thanks

I used to have the same problem, it virtually disappeared when I installed a Neuspeed Shortshifter

Really? This seems more like a lubrication problem.

I was going to install a short shifter anyhow, but the cash flow is a bit short right now.

Default I think it's not just a lubriccation problem, but also the accuracy of the shifter......

the Neuspeed is a lot tighter, much less slop. I still notice a little bit more resistance when it's cold, but it's not nearly as bad.

The manual transmissions come filled with synthetic. Just don't shift to hard until it warms up.

Default are you sure about that? ....

I read on the S4 forum that Audi only started putting in synthetic tranny fluid for 2002 model year S4. I don't know whether they started doing it for all Audis or just the S4. In any case, I doubt the A4s before 2002 have been filled with synthetic tranny oil from the factory.

Default that's been true for every manual I've ever owned

just go easy on them when they're cold. if they're still hard to get into gear when warm, then you've got something to complain about.
