Default tried to change my thermostat and failed, help?

Hi.

I tried to install a low temp thermostat, but I couldn't remove the 2 (10mm?) bolts on the water pump housing--they're too hard to get at--couldn't get a socket on 'em. Any help about what tool to use is appreciated.

I have no help on the 10mm bolts, but unless you are racing this car, would
not recommend doing this. I did it on my GTI, and it accomplishes absolutely
nothing. It opens the water circuit sooner, so it takes longer to get up to op
temp, but car still runs at the same water temp eventually. It does not lower
the oil temp either.

Anthony, I've never done this job, and don't know all that is holding you from getting at bolts, but some ideas. These are assuming they're hex, and not Allen or Star head.

a) use the smallest ratchet set you can; 3/8 or 1/2

b) try a box-end wrench, either standard or offset head

c) have seen wrenches that have a socket built into the end

d) might also try a ratcheting box-end wrench. However, this requires a fairly wide area around the bolt to get the wrench head on -I doubt if this exists on a water pump.

e) You probably don't have the room for this, but I have used it on seat rail Allen head bolts that are buried in the rail and I stripped the head on. Get a center punch, and tap a small indentation in the side of the bolt head. Now incline the punch sideways so that when you rap it, you are imparting a turning torque in the unscrewing direction. You might need a new bolt later, but you might get it out.

f) Another technique I have used on stripped bolt heads is to get a small 6" pipe wrench, grab the bolt head tight with it, then rap the end of the wrench handle sharply with a hammer. The shock loosens the bolt.

Would have to say MartinR has some good points. Have you tried running with just a 20% antifreeze mix in summer? Water gives better heat transfer than anti-freeze. Might also try some "Water Wetter"; have heard it might help and have heard no detrimental info about it.
