Turbo replacement, Should I remove oil lines, oil pan?
I just pulled my old turbo that died.
I'm getting the new turbo ready to put in now. I was hoping to check the oil lines. The top oil line runs right over the manifold and turbo. Would it be a good idea to take that line off to see that it is flowing well? When I looked at where it bolts to the engine, underneath the intake manifold, I wondered why we consider "German" engineering to be a good thing...... That line willl be hard to get off.
Would it be advisable to pull that line to check it? The engine has over 120k milesWould it be advisable to pull the pan to clean it?

just replace the oil line. It's like $70. Oil pan is going to be harder to take off
and is generally not done with turbo replacement if you know you have no sludge issues.
You can get some cheap oil and change it a couple times every 50-100 miles to flush the engine.

how often do you change your oil and what oil you use is a big factor
if you're changing your oil every 5k with synthetic and don't get any oil pressure lights you SHOULD be fine.
Sludge is a a result of people using dino oil and following the Audi recommended interval of 10k.
That's a quick answer, there's tons of info on sludge in the archives.

How I found out I had sludge (despite regular changes & Castrol Syntec) ...
At around 84K miles I would get intermittent Oil pressure alarms. It would alarm then go quiet for days. After a few weeks it was happening more often so I took it in to my Indie shop and they checked the oil pressure with a gauge. It would stop rising at around 2K rpm's. They dropped the oil pan and desludged everything, replaced the turbo oil lines and put in a new oil pump.
Since 40K miles the car has had Castrol Syntec at 3000 mile intervals. Not sure what was done the first 40K. Audi refused to pay for the sludge repair becuase the oil changes after 40K were done by the owner - no records from a certified shop. Runs great now.

Is there a way to diagnose sludge without dropping the pan?
