Default UPDATE - Trying to convince dad to get me an A4

First I really want to thank you all for you input. Even though this is an Audi forum, you guys told me what I didn't really want to hear, but I thank you for that, because you were a mutual party, and really made me see how staying with the Saab 9000 Aero was the right choice.

Having said that, I would like to reply to a few people. UofM is not the only school in Michigan. There is a very very good little engineering school in Flint, Michigan called Kettering University. This is where I will be attending. Parking is not hard as they have a huge lot and freshmen are aloud to bring cars

The only reason I even have such a nice car, is because we got a really really good deal on it. I was going to put in $5-7K of my own money to get the car, but I guess the resale value wouldn't be so great.

My only last little thing to add is, at Kettering they have a co-op program with Audi Performance & Racing. If you're not familiar with co-op, how it works at Kettering is you go to school for 3 months and work for 3 months, and keep switching throughout your college life. APR was my #1 choice to co-op with, and I figured I should be driving an Audi if I work there, besides I feel the Audi is the nicest looking affordable car on the road.

Thanks again for making me come to my senses. I really appreciate all the help you guys gave me, and when I do get my Audi sometime, I will be sure to come back here with lots more questions.

Best regards,

Brian

Default So you'll definitely be doing your coop with APR??

Or do you have to apply for that still? That would be awesome if you could work there for your coop!! Unfortunately, you might also spend all your money on toys for the car (if you had an Audi), so maybe the Saab is a blessing in disguise?

Default No, not there yet.

From what i have been told, its a very hard job to get. I'm just saying that it was my #1 choice and is a dream job, and might, very slight posiblity be able to co-op there.

I just spoke to my father and he said "he was glad I heard it from a 3rd party to keep the saab" he also said if I do get a job at APR "there's no reason to not get you a newer Audi". So we will see, but I wanted to thank you all again, you guys are really great.

I wish that all the "young guys" had your maturity.

Thanks, I'm going to need it. Supposedly only one current student is working there now, so that tells you how hard a job it is to get. I'll defiantly keep you guys updated on how it turns out.

Gooseguy84 -

Good choice. If you're not from Michigan, you'll quickly learn the "attitude" of UofM alumni/students - it's always in good fun. I have tons of friends that I met at other great schools in the Big Ten and throughout the region. Kettering is a great school (formally GMI, I think). It is one of the top places to go if you are considering the auto industry. I graduated from the engineering school (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering) at Michigan, and I have yet to have one day that I regretted the choice. I met my wife there (just a couple of engineering geeks!), and her brother also graduated at Michigan with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He worked on Future Car, a must project to get involved with (I'm pretty sure Kettering participates in it) if you wish to get into the real engineering work on cars (especially in the Detroit area). Good luck with your studies, and hope you end up with a great co-op opportunity.

ps here is a picture of my old Yota that got me around while I was at school - and what I did to it the day I bought my first Audi!

Default Good luck!!!

The coop programs are definitely a good way to go! I have a cousin that did this at U of Cincinnati (Chem E)...he had a great job lined up right out of college. With all the work experience he amassed over 5 years (split between work and school), he had no problems getting job offers (even in a **** poor job market). Another cousin did a 4 year degree at UofM, spent 7 months jobless, and finally got a job in Dayton with half the growth potential and 30% less money. I'm sure there were other factors at play...but the bottom line was one entered the job market with experience, the other did not. Every edge you can carve for yourself in this job market will help! Again...good luck to you!

LOL, funny picture. It was really small though, just to let you know.

One of the mail reasons I chose Kettering; "mgmavant, you are correct, it use to be GMI" was because of the co-op. Leaving college with two and a half years of real world job experience, in my mind is priceless. Now it's just getting the awesome co-op at APR and I'll be living the good life.
