Is the wastegate rod breakage on the 97 & 98 1.8T's a big problem? Could someone elaborate?

Default my MY97 1.8T has 144Kmi. on original turbo...
although the newer turbo are stronger i see no real problems.

but even so you can find a used turbo in good shape for a couple hunny max. :$$ they are pretty worthless.

Have a 98.5, it broke at 30,000 miles. had to get a new turbo
