What kind of HP gains in a chipped 2.8?
#3
Very little (5-10 hp maybe)...
Very few people have chipped the 2.8. I can comment based on my experience chipping my M3. The power gain is not really noticeable. The main reason to chip a NA engine is to bump up the rev limiter and eliminate the speed governor. Also, the power band might drop down a little in the rev range, depending on how the fuel mapping is done. For me, it was a worthwhile upgrade on the M3.

Yeah, that's pretty much my own experience on my 30-valve 2.8. The improvement is small, however you do feel a small difference: engine sound is nicer and the engine pull is a little more sustained at mid to high revs.

Myself, I went for the Neuspeed chip because the power increase is more conservative and I didn't want to take any chances in my dashlights lighting up like a christmas tree. If the engine program is too agressive, the ECU can send some warnings. That's the limited extent of my knowledge.
Don Pavlik used to run a chip survey at www.audizone.com but he merged his web site with www.audiworld.com a few months ago and the survey results have yet to re-appear.
