Default White smoke coming out of the AC

my friend has a A4 2.8 quartto. Last week, white smoke comes out when the AC is turned on (with and
without recycling the air), but it is not consistent, sometimes it comes out in higher temp (like 69 degree), sometimes it comes out when the fan speed is low....

The smoke is white, I cannot smell anything, and AC is still cool.... Any idea what is causing the white smoke? Please let me know if you
need additional info.

Many thanks

You sure it is smoke and not condensations?

Default No problem, it's just moisture that's condensing.

When something cold meets something warms with moisture, you get condensation. Just like a cold Pepsi can condenses on the outside. The air coming from the A/C is condensing. It's not a problem and is normal. It should last for more than a few minutes.

It's the fog that turns you inside-out.

Default May be the Heater Core....

Mine went out and I experienced the same thing. Smoke/mist comes out initially.
Cause....Heater core went bad or cracked. More than likely if this is the case, he will have coolant leaking in the passenger floorboard and or underneath the car. Reason being is that the heater is infront of the firewall/behind the dash.
Check under the car and coolant level.

Here's the kicker.....
If it's out of warranty he's screwed.

Part $150
Labor $800 10 fricken hours!
They have to take apart the entire dash

Options...Get an aftermarket extended warranty that covers it. (will be more expensive upfront but may save in longrun)

Or

Have it bypassed and have your heater not work

or

Fix it

Hope that this helps and hope it's not the heater core.

Default Same here

I had my heater core crack on my 98.5 A4 at about 3 years, 64,000 miles.

I too noticed the "white smoke" come out when turning the AC on.

As boba fett mentioned, it cost a lot to fix.

You should also be able to smell antifreeze from your vents if it is a cracked heater core.

My extended warranty (warrantybynet.com) paid for it. I highly recommend an extended warranty for this car.
