Will the engine last?
How long will the engines last? Will the 1.8T run for more than 100K, what if it is chipped? How about the 2.8. For the past 5 years I have been trading cars in right before the warranty runs out (1-2 years for each car, mostly Mazdas; MX6, 626, etc) I can rationalize spending more on a 2000 2.8 only if I know it will last for a while. I guess my question is this:
Is there anybody out there that has about 100K on their Audi A4, and if there are, what kind of problems have you had?
with proper maintanence, you can run at least 100K miles on just about any new car made these days. Even, gasp, an American car. Now how much you enjoy those 100,000 depends largely on what brand you buy, obviously. Know going in that German cars are going to be more expensive than domestic and Japanese cars to fix in their waning years. But the payback is well worth it in driving enjoyment.

The question is how expensive will it be to keep the car running for 200k?
If you are thinking that the extra money spent on the A4 vs a Mazda 626 will pay for itself in terms of long term ownership costs you are SADLY MISTAKEN.
European cars in general are about 3 times costlier for parts than Japanese.
If the economy of long term ownership is your only concern then get a Honda or Toyota.
On the other hand, if you drive the A4 you will find that the enjoyment is well worth the money you spend.
