Default WOOHOO!! I was spot on with my 0-60 performance estimates for the 2001 170 hp A4 1.8T!

Audi's published performance values for the 2000 A4 1.8T with 170 hp and 166 lb ft. of torque (now up on their website) are just what I had previously predicted via a linear regression analysis of Audi's published performance, power, torque, and weight data for the 2000 A4 1.8T, 2.8, and S4 2.7T:

7.8s 0-60 for the 2001 A4 1.8T Sedan Quattro Manual
8.0s 0-60 for the 2001 A4 1.8T Avant Quattro Manual

Just had to do my nerd/victory dance!

https://www.audiworld.com/forum/m/a4/msgs/261592.phtml</a

Maybe Audi was lazy and employed the same regression analyses for their results...

Default Check THIS out! 1.8Tip FWD is faster than a 2.8Tip FWD!?!?!

From Audiusa.com on 2001 Models 0-60mph times....

1.8T 5spd/Tip
Frontrak 7.5/8.2
Quattro 7.8/8.8

2.8 5spd/Tip
Frontrak NA/8.4
Quattro 7.3/8.8

WTF? A Tipronic FWD 1.8T is FASTER than a Tiptronic FWD 2.8? And the Quattro/Tips are the same speed? Looks like only the 2.8 5sp is faster than an equivalent 1.8T.

Well, I *know* my stock '00 1.8TQMS was faster than the "8.4" that Audi officially claimed it was. More like 7.5s I think, especially since I could Gtech it at 7.2s pretty easily (but Gtechs are a bit optimistic I think).

Very interesting. I think 2.8 sales just went over a cliff. Audi needs a 215-220hp 3.0L BADLY!

I do complex regression analyses as my job. We would love it if you work in our company, mm.

Default Doubt it's the slight weight difference; maybe different gear ratios.

But it could very well be true. The 2.8 is a slug below 2800 RPMs, and tip in particular has very tall gears.

Interestingly, even before MY 2001 MS CarPoint claimed that in their instrumented tests, the 1.8T was faster than the 2.8 in all configurations. I emailed them and asked if they really stood by those results, and never got an answer ...

Great analyses though. Very commendable.

Default Re: Doubt it's the slight weight difference; maybe different gear ratios.

There are several things that are relevant:

1. weight
2. gearing
3. power and torque curve characteristics - the 1.8t has a much broader torque curve than the 2.8. The peak values alone are not nearly as important to performance as the are under the power and torque curves.
