Would like to purchase an A4
Hi guys,im new here. I recently decided to get a used A4 (1999.5-2001)with around 60K+ miles after also looking at bmw 3 series.
Im looking to spend around 10-11k on the car total (including taxes, registration etc..)
I heard that the timing belt is one of the major problems with the audis over 60k miles.
Would it be possible for me to find an a4 that is the 1999.5 to 2001 design with around 60k+ miles for around 10-11k total price.(im in NYC but can travel to pick it up)
Also, is it a good idea to get some extended warranty program or just set aside about 1k for repairs.
thanks!

I think you will be hard pressed to find one with those miles for that price
but it is doable.
Boosted sold his 01.5 A4 for 13K about a year ago I think.
The key being to find someone desperate, like he was to sell.

thanks guys, well i know 60k may be a little on the low side, but id like something that will last me for a few years without having to put more money into it,and ill be able to re sell later.
I currently have a 98 galant and never had a problem with it.

trade in value for my 99.5 2.8 Q Tip w/ 75k miles is $10.5 K (dealer quote)
only without (I think) sport susp. and gauge cluster puter (if that was available in 99.5, but since all I hear about them are: "dead pixels EVERYWHERE!" kinda glad I don't got it...
But I figure a 1.8T 99.5+ (60k mile range) could be had for 11k, won't be loaded, but even then they are always more nicely equipped than non luxary cars with that same price...
w/o quattro will keep the $cost down too

most any audi isnt a car for you then
since they all require a considerable amount of maintenance... the more you can do yourself the more affordable the car is... there is no audi that wont require you put money into it.

my intentions aren't to change your mind, rather just look at things differently....
i was going to get a "newer" A4 (99.5-01) but they were all over priced and had problems right down the road. they were all between $14,500-16,000 i thought it would be better to get a newer A4 because they would have lower miles. Right? well, yes they do but, if you buy an A4 with 48-58k miles, that just means you bought a car that will have at least $1,000 buck worth of repairs in the next 6 months or so. (unless you DIY tb,wp)
i bought a 97.5 1.8t A4. all the tire rods are new. timing belt is replaced along with a merid of other items that will break down in the near future on your "newer" A4. the 97.5 had 89k miles, a bigger turbo, better susspention and a few other mods that i was going to do on my "newer" A4. so i spent 9 grand and have loved it far more then the 2001 A4 that i had before. and i saved a lot of money. the body on the 97 and the 2001 are practically identical. put on some 17"aftermarket wheels and do a double take every time i get out of the car.
(by the way. i got this advise from a few of the other audi owners on this forum... thanks again!)

My .02 $...
I was looking into a Mitsubishi Eclipse before i got my A4. (1998 2.8L Quattro). I got it at 60,000 and am currently at 68,000. So far i've spent abou 500$ on valid repairs, and over a grand on other little upgrades (Headlights, Tailights, side markers, K & n, RS4 Grill, Headlamp washer replaced, Snub Mount, brake pads) All this stuff wasn't really neccesity, the only thing i really needed was a powersteering rack and tie rod ends.
A4's are going to require maintenance, if you want something alot more reliable and you can drive to the ground a honda or toyota is good(i'm not trying to mock you). But I drive the audi for the experience, the car literally feels like a part of you rather then a detached piece of machinery. Best of luck.. oh M3'S are fast and nice, but the majority of the drivers are stuck up ( I know i'm sterotyping). The majority of Audi drivers I wave to, wave back and we just nod in appreciation. Once again Good Luck
