My kids are 5, 8, and 10 and this is exactly why I have the child door latches set on both our cars.
My kids think I'm a bit of an ***, because they can't let themselves out of the car. I like to control when and how they open the doors and get out.

THEY are what's wrong with our society. They need to take responsibility for their own actions...
File a claim. Too bad you didn't call the police. Granted, it's not a huge amount of damage, and they may not have come.
I teach my kids to be respectful of other people's property, and that includes being VERY careful around other people's cars in parking lots.

How can you ask someone to take responsibility for their kids Kris?
don't you know that's unamerican!
Geez, kids are the government's responsibility, don't you know That?????
=)
I had a similar situation with my car about 3 months after I bought it. I came out from lunch at this chinese place in Downtown Orlando (Chan's, the best dim sum for lunch) and this lady in a van was parked next to my car. She got out and proceeded to apologize profusely.
Apparently, she was in the parking lot to pick up her Autistic son from the school next to the restaurant. As she was backing out of her spot on the opposite side of the parking lot row (angle parking lot) she backed into my rear quarter panel causing this damage:

She waited while I was at lunch (with her autistic child by the way) to apologize and to give me her insurance info to get it fixed. I was amazed that she waited nearly 30 min to do that.
By the time I had called her insurance company, they were already expecting my phone call as she had already notified them to expect my call. Got the damage estimated and they wrote me a check for $425. I decided the damage was livable and decided to buy a full detail kit (Porter Cable etc) and buff out the entire car instead.

Second on the dent wizard idea... if you are in new england, I have a guy.
He pulled a few dents out of the avant, and it's unreal how good the car looks now. Truly like it never happened.
But, since they were ****** about it, I say make them pay to have the car repainted... ha.
