Wider is better for dry traction, narrow better for snow..

Default 215/55/16 it maintains the expected overall diameter of 25.3".

And it's wider

The next closest match at only 0.2% under (25.25") is the 235/50/16. Ooouuu, I'm getting tingly.

wider is also *worse* for hydro-planing. 215 is stock so that's what you want.

Both sizes are listed for 16inch wheels. Ive 205/55/16 on 7.5 inch rims. They sit very "Upright", and the rim edge is quite exposed s kerbing a potential issue.
On previus car(98 A4 Avant) had 205/60/15 on 7 inch rims. they gave more protection to rims, and also looked more agresive than on the new 7.5 inch rims. The 215s were only availble with a V speed rating, making them much more expensive than H rating that was need for my 2.0l (up to 130mph). Availablity also not so easy for 215 size. In Ireland we use all season tyresand do not change tires for winter.
I did not want to use a high speed rated tyre in the winter. They are terrible on ice or snow(not normally more that a few days of the year with our weather ) Ive gone with Conti Sport contact- very pleased both wet and dry grip good, and not too noisy on the road.
