Up until we got the 328i, the previous smoothest engine was the Toyota I6 in our Supra.
It had a nice subdued exhaust note unlike any other I've heard, a hollow throatiness that I enjoyed.
Many enthusiasts like to hear their engines. Others don't want to know it's there. Part of the subjective smoothness ratings being offered are probably influenced by the noise factor as much as the vibration factor. Wouldn't recommend the Mighty 3-O to anyone seeking a silent engine, but would be happy to recommend on basis of low vibration. Not as the best ever, which seems to be the exclusive territory of the I6. But would simply observe that vibration is perhaps the last thing I would think of to complain about in the A4 3-O. And that seems to be the nearly unanimous consensus of the 3-O owners on this list.
