A4 Avant Tailgate not closing properly ( occasionally)
The tail gate on my A4 Avant (2002) does not always latch closed . When you close down tailgate it seems to only partly latch , if you press boot relaease and wait a second (you hear lock motor relaese) then close agin it latches OK. Any sugestions to fault?

I had this same problem on my avant.
It was the latch mechanism itself. It wasn't being reset to lock mode by the motors. I ended up buying a new latch mech from the dealer. I forget the cost..maybe $50 to $70. Have to find the receipt.
Mine eventually got to the point where it wouldn't even do the partial latch. That sucked.

Same with my '03, the latch striker plate on the body side, is adjustable..
and the rear lid stops are adjustable as well.
Using the adjustments available, the position of the latch and the closed stop position of the rear lid is optimized for the rear lid to operate smoother and latch reliably.
