Adding coolant?

do it while engine is running or off? I know coolant expands, but while it is off it is below min line. When running it goes back to almost max line. I had coolant added when i replaced a hose about a week ago. He topped it off and was above max line. When i opened the resvior coolant started leaking from the back of it. Normal? any suggestions?

You opened the reservoir while it was under pressure, sure it's normal for some to come out.

Fill up to max line when car is off and engine is cold.
