B6 OEM brakes BT (yes, I STFA)
Most commentary on brakes in this forum has to do with upgrades. I'm not thinking in those terms right now. I'm easy on the car in general, and it's otherwise bone stock.
There doesn't seem to be much consensus when it comes to remaining more or less stock with brakes. Some say ATE is crap, and others say it's acceptable. Due to a recent death in the family, money is very tight, so while I want to have a safe-to-drive car, I also need to make sure I don't get raped on new rotors and pads. Familiar with Blau and a few of the other places mentioned here in the past. Not sure where to go if I order online (keeping in mind freight costs might offset any savings versus local indy shop I'd usually trust with this). What's my best bet then, with all this in mind?

Personally, I was impressed with www.genuinevwaudiparts.com...
I recently had to purchase a door control module, the closest dealership quoted me $404CAD (+14% tax + shipping $11). I got it from genuinevwaudiparts for $214USD (exchange on par right now, no tax, + $16 shipping).
You might want to give them a try.<ul><li><a href="http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214407">http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214407</a</li></ul>

Go with OEM rotors and Hawk HPS or Carbotech Bobcat brake pads. It'll be a nice improvement.
Alternatively you can go with Ferodo DS2500 pads which are even better, but they dust A LOT.
If you can live with the dust (I can't personally), they are your best bet tho.

You mean non-oem pads? OEM pads work sort of okay, dust a lot, but are quiet...
Hawk HPS dust a lot less than OEM, brake a lot better, but can be noisy sometimes.
Carbotech Bobcats dust even less then Hawk HPS, brake a lot better then OEM and are noise-free (I get may be 3-5 squeaks per week from my setup).
Proper bed-in is key with aftermarket pads (imo).

try thepartsbin.com or worldimpex.com for zimmerman rotors. shipping wasn't too bad from worldimpex
and is free from thepartsbin for orders over $50.
hawk hps pads from raceshopper.com - good prices, good guys.
i just did this all around and am happy so far (with all of 300 miles on them). if you're having a shop install, make sure they are cool with you bringing in the parts as most prefer or require that you get the parts from them.
