Can I get service history from dealer?
Since my recently purchased '02 has 46K miles on the clock, I'd like to see what the service history is. Will the dealer likely provide this to me, assuming all work was done by an Audi dealer? I'm assumming all service history is available to all dealers - is that a good/bad assumption? I can only guess where the car was serviced.

They dont have to because............
It can be invasion of privacy. Many times you must have previous owners consent. I guess the dealer can if they want, but many don't just to cover their *****.

If the car is in your possession, they....
have no reason to refuse you the history of the car.
I have been able to pull service records from the dealer to help a friend who was buying a used A4. But be adviced they will not fax them to you, as it is confidential. But if you have possession of the car they should be able to give it to you.
and in your case you have already bought the car ... i dont see how they can refuse that!!

Actually, I take that back.....
Its completely illegal, covered by the privacy protection act for the dealership to release information to a second, third, fourth etc...owner BECAUSE. The first original owner paid for and authorized work to be done to the vehicle they owned. In order to obtain previous records you must have permission from the prior owner via either written or direct verbal consent. If a dealership gives you the information anyway then they put themselves at risk.

Re: Actually, I take that back.....
Okay, thanks for the official story. Sounds like our gov't working over-time, but I sorta understand the rationale as it's a law with general application. They're not going to typically un-do a privacy law for a handful of car geeks who want to see what date the CP was replaced on cylinder #2!
But is the data even there for ANY Audi dealer to see, or is it only view-able by the servicing dealer? Just trying to figure out how many hurdles I might need to clear....

Every franchised dealership........
has access to the data. However, only the servicing dealer will have the description of the service. Other dealers will see service codes. Of course codes can be looked up, or ran through the computer to determine the type of service(ing) that took place.
