Default check engine light

wondering if it is safe to drive. My check engine light came on last night and remained solid after I started the engine. I also heard a little grinding/whining noise around the center console near the radio and heat unit. The noise reappears when I turn on and off the heating unit. I called the dealer to bring in my car but could only make an appointment for next Tuesday. The service rep said it is safe to drive and thought it might be the emissions sensor. I doubt that though. Beside the question of whether it is safe to drive can anyone think what it might be? Oh yes, I have a 2003 bb A4 CVT with only 11,000 miles. A

I had a similar problem, ended up being my thermostat. When the heater is on is the air warm or does it heat up like it is supposed to?

The heater does heat up like it suppose to. What I have also noticed is that recently(before the check engine light came on) when I start the car the engine would not rev above 1000 rpm and then drop down within a few minutes. The engine would just stay below 1000 rpm.

If it was flashing, not just solid then don't drive it. That's how they know.
