Default Check engine light on..

..03 1.8Tq Check engine light came on...is solid. My engine has sounded horrible for a week now and shakes a lot. I can't get to a vag til tomorrow. I want to go out and try a coil pack. Just wanted 2nd opinion before I played with the car! Thanks!! If it is coil pack, it's my first so I'm still a lil nervous playing with stuff.

Default My experience... coilpack failure gets you a flashing CEL. But considering how often they fail, and

how cheap they are, it would be a good start to replace all four of them first.

BTW... a coilpack is easier than changing a spark plug. Search the archives - youll find some detailed 'how to' posts on changing coil packs.

Default I already STFA and have my directions handy..only have 1 coil pack in trunk

so I'll start with that. I'm going to the dealer on the 30th, so hopefully I can go 2 more weeks!! My cigarette lighter is burnt out and the CPO warranty covers it..that is soo crazy!! They say it also covers coilpacks, so if I still got a light I'm covered. Just hate to drive it with the light on..don't want it flashing. Although I did drive my 99A4 for a year with a CEL...bad bad me, guess that's why I traded it for a warranty LOL

One coil pack is all you need. This will take ten minutes. Just do it.

Default I did it!

The car is idling smooth, engine not shaking, I go to take a test drive and the CEL starts flashing and the car doesn't want to go!!! When I played musical coilpacks, the car starting dying when I took out 1, 2 & 4. So I changed #3. (1 being the one near the front of car)Wiring harness is on tight & coilpack is in secure. Guess I just suck!! ( AAgghh This isn't fun anymore! Now I've called and got my other 3 ordered, just gonna change out all 4 like MikTip said!! Thanks!!

Default I knew you could. However, I would just change the ones that fail.

The new ones fail too. Just put the new ones in the trunk for the next time.

Default Why not get 4 brand new "R" coil-packs, and not worry about it for a few years?

Instead of lugging around spare parts in the trunk, and hoping the next time, if and when it occurs, the correct fix will be the spare coil-pack which has been rattling around in the trunk for months...

I'd rather spend the $100 or so, and have the issue "fixed/resolved/closed" and no spare parts in the trunk.

One of the first things I did on my 2004, was replace the 4 "L" version coil-packs, with the newer "R" versions. That was over 2 years ago, and never a problem since. Sure I could of saved $75 and only replaced the bad coil, one-at-a-time, but why? When I can buy 4 "new & improved" coils, install'm, and have trouble-free driving for many miles!

Kind of like, only replacing one tire at a time, when it gets worn?

Dam! I just bought 5 tires! Hopefully I'll be able to use that spare one day. Hate to have spent all that cash, an never use the spare. (

Default Electrical components can fail at any time. I think the new and old both suck.

So I do carry a spare, two of them.

Mix-matching new with old, will cause more problems, especially with electrical components ;o)
