coolant problems
a3 1.6 2004 driving home engine temp rises to 120 got home checked for leaks none found. cold air from heater vents also hose to thermostat soft. when car cooled down it seems there is no coolant in the top of the engine. when I released the expansion tank cap the level rose to near the top as the engine cooled it has dropped down to well below the min level. any advise would be great.

I dont have this exact model, but the theory should be the same. If the coolant returned after you released the pressure cap, there is a blockage somewhere. The larger hoses are less likely to block but the small hoses and the heater hoses & heater core can block. I'd start by:
1. Inspect the cap, if its not releasing the pressure then they are cheap to replace
2. Check the small bleed back hose to the reservoir tank is not blocked.
3. bleed any air out of the system at the engine bleed screw and the return heater hose.
4. turn the heater on full and check that the thermostat is actually opening up and you get hot coolant on the heater return hose.
