Engine cooling performance

long time reader first time poster. my 03 a4 1.8t quattro has been good to me so far, changed the t-belt myself at 66k along w/h cts, fuel filter. last few days every time i start the car after sitting for a long time both coolant fans kick on full blast. they shut off once the engine temp increases. today i got a code P2181. i only have a scan tool that can do generic obd2 so i cant see what the cts's are doing. i also had a pending code P3081. anyone got any ideas what may be wrong?

It looks like the problem might be with the coolant temperature sensor by the firewall.
(sorry, I don't know why the hell the first picture turned out so big!)
