Engine timing

Since everything was mechanical back then, it was easy to throw things out of whack. For instance, if you got into a stoplight race with somebody, you could go back home and check your engine's timing -- only to find that it had shifted a bit because of the high-revving stress you just put on it.
My question now is, does that still happen with a modern engine, or does the car's computer keep things like timing in a state of constant adjustment?
Thanks.
