Default How to tell if water pump is bad

04 A4 1.8t Quattro sedan.
Took the thermostat out bc car was overheating. Changed it and air the system out. Can’t even go around the block without overheating to the max. But when in park at idle stays at normal. Once it heat temp max out and I slow down. The temp goes down. The head is very hot. But the hose on bottom radiator is cold. I took a picture inside the engine block to see if water pump impellers were broken. Can someone tell me if they can tell if the impellers are broken by the picture? I’m around to change the water pump. Just hate to if not broken.

Sometimes the impeller is spinning on the shaft but the car doesn't typically over heat as fast as you describe, Steel.

Do you know how many miles are on the car? Original water pump?

Per uberwgn, try to make that impeller rotate (without applying more than a little force). If it turns, then the pump is bad.

I stuck my finger in there and I was able to turn the impellers very easily so the water pump is bad according to you.

Yep, so that's why the overheating - coolant wasn't moving. With a new pump your cooling system will be functioning again.

I hope so. Because I’ve been fighting to get good heat in the car for two years since I’ve owned the car. Thank you.
