Sound and connection info inside:
Connection
The blue wire is a 1/8" mini -> RCA cable. It plugs in to the Female RCA inputs of a "Blitzsafe Aux Adapter" behind the head unit.
The Blitzsafe adapter plugs in to the back of the headunit. Part of the function of the adpater is fooling the headunit in to thinking you have an additional (glove box) CD Changer installed.
Hence, when you push the CD button a second time, it switches to CDC. Track 99 is always displayed.
Sound Quality
I encode all of my CD's at a rate of 192kbps (fairly high) in the apple AAC format.
When the iPod is connected to my home stereo (Rotel/B&W) the sound quality is surprisingly good. Not CD quality, but splitting hairs at this point(unless you are a self proclaimed 'audiophile',picky gits.).
In the Car.
At volumes up to 19-20. It sounds damn near as clear as a CD, above this volume slight distortion is perceptable. I blame this on the Blitzsafe Adapter - it is not a high end Audio component - then neither is the stock Audi Stereo.
For me this is definatly the way to go. I have had only good experiences with my iPod and the variety 40GB's of music gives you is addicting.
Plus with this install I grab the iPod on my way out, and listen while at work.

the mini's fit in the 3G 30GB and 40GB docks.
I'll snap a pic some time of the mini sitting in the dock for ya.

Griffin PowerPod
I have a griffin PowerPod.
I wanted to make use of the power also, I drive long trips to see family etc... and like to use the backlight while in the car.
I am going to install the PowerPod under the shift cover.
I didn't plug the dock connector in the back yet, as I will have to cut another hole in the back of the Ashtray.
I had 'misplaced' my dremel while I did the work, so had to use my drill and a hack saw. (I know, I know). Cutting the hole in the back is a more delicate job (not to interfear with movement). So I will do that when I find my dremel. (or just go buy another).

Thanks for the write-up!
I have "audiophile" cds in my collection. Admittedly, the car is not the place for critical listening - call me a picky git, ha ha - but my issue with mp3s is a bit different.
I'm still back in the 90s and using dial-up so my downloads are fred flintsone speed.
Also, my downloads tend to be remixes, live, and/or rare versions of songs not readily available commercially. so quality tends to suffer. I've transferred downloaded tracks to cd and played 'em in the car and the sound can be terrible.

I only have digital music that I have uploaded from my CD collection
I currently have 360++ CD's uploaded on to my iPod and Home PC.
This way I can control the quality.
I also have had bad experiences downloading music. The quality is often crap.
I spent a few years being a "picky git", I still enjoy grabbing a good CD, and sitting for a listen. But find so little time to do so.
In car is just convenient.
As is hooking the iPod up to the homestereo when you have guests over (Worked great with family over for Christmas).
