iPod Ashtray install
#22
Nice install...I remember all the research I went through to install mine last summer
with the Blitzsafe...did you follow someone else's write up? I am curious because I would spring for another stand in order to do that and use line out.
My current setup:

This was actually one of my few original ideas. :)
I took pictures whilst I was cutting the ashtray up etc...
I could put together a write up with pics if that would help you at all.

Hehe.
I have the 40GB iPod. I am ~60% full with around 360 CD's recorded at 192kbps. So another 300 CD's to go.
Unfortunately I don't have 660 CD's. - Yet.

how long does it take to transfer over a full cd?
say, like a 70 minute cd. . . . and, I assume it would take less time if the original cd is only 45 minutes. . . .
and about 660 cds is the max on 40gb ipod?
well. i just spent the last 15 minutes surfin ebay lookin for a great deal. . . now I am just a bit less enthused. . . .i have just a few more than may fit on the ipod so the question is which to leave out. . . . .
AND, how do you access the tracks? is it direct access or scroll through?

Info Inside
One Time
CD --> PC 4/min CD
PC --> iPod 10secs/Album
Updating (when you have added new CD's to your PC since your last iPod sync.
PC --> iPod <1.0 Sec/Song
660 is a guideline based on my experience (and encoding rate.) (About 60MB/CD) Your milage may vary.
Recording the CD's on to your computer using iTunes, is very simple, yet is the step that will take you the longest.
Each CD takes about 4 mins to upload on to your computer harddrive, using iTunes (Apple's music player and organizer that autosyncs with your iPod).
You could load 1,000 CD's on to your PC (providing your PC harddrive was big enough).
Syncing the music from the PC -> iPod is _VERY_ fast, using the supplied FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable.
Starting from scratch, if you uploaded all your CD's before you bought an iPod it would probably take less than an hour to transfer 10,000 songs.
If you have more music on your PC (from your 700+ CD's than will fit on the iPod, iTunes recognizes this, and can help you decide which CDs/Playlists/Genre/whatever you would like to have of your iPod each time you hook it up to your PC.
This is how I use the iPod mini (that has roughly a 90 CD capacity.
So you may only be able to take 660 of your CD's with you each time, but that should get you quite far. Next time you hook up you can switch 100 CD's in a matter of minutes.
I realize I sound like a sales rep, when infact I have no affilitation with Apple and my iPods are my only Apple products (thus far). But I hope my comments are of some help.

Thanks again!
No I'm back to really really wanting one. Found Apple has 10% off . . . .but on the 30gb model. I may go with that if I have the ability to change out songs at will. . . .
I do appreciate the time and effort you took to explain it to me.
I was just joking around when I said they need to put you on commission. .. . . your write ups were clear and easy to understand. . .Should add those along with install notes (and pics!!!) to the tech section. I'm sure others would benefit from them. . . .
and. . . .when i get my ipod i'll be searching the archive to get install details.
