Like limp mode but x1rider had a similar problem a few posts down.
Cold in MN today and car ('04 1.8TQ 6spd w APR stage 1) still started fine at -5F. Drove about a mile and when leaving from a light it wouldn't run more that about 1500rpm but would idle fine. Crawled into a side street to get out of traffic and let it idle for a while but no change.
There were two errors displayed, the circle with triangle for ESP error and the letters EPC which indicates an error in the engine management electronics.
Finally, turned it off and it re-started and ran fine with no errors displayed.
I don't have access to a VAG until later this week so am trying to guess what happened to decide how worried I will be.
Two ideas:
- Beginning of a coil pack failure. I don't think this is it.
- Coolant temperature sensor error or out of range. Maybe the sensor told the ECU that it was warm enough to shut off the cold start injector before it really was. This caused a lean condition and threw an error that was reset after restarting.
Engine failures when it is well below zero is way more than an inconvienence. It can be damn dangerous.
