Default long-terms repairs, 1.8 stick vs. cvt

Looking at both the 1.8 FWD stick and cvt. I like both. On the reliability issue, I understand you can count on a clutch replacement at around 75k or so and it costs about $1400. As for the current automatics, they may go bad with long milage and that costs about $7000. The clutch replacement seems inevitable. What about the automatic tranny, is replacement a rarity? Odds for replacement with CVT increase since its new? Should I not worry about it, since auto tranny replacement would be so unlikely?

been in the works for ten years, despite being new tech, the number of parts are remarkably low, not too much to go wrong, the part which wears down, the hardened metal belt, is very long lasting, wears down by a tenth of a millimeter per ten thousand miles or something stupid like that, I know that figures wrong, actually, ill just go check it up now lol. but all in all, id say its a good piece of technology, I suppose only time will tell, perhaps ill eat my words, I hope not!

I could imagine a failure in the hydraulics in it, but I can't imagine there'd be a design flaw that would allow that to happen anytime within the first 100k miles or more.

Default Automotive manual is 100 years old or so. CVT is approx 50 years old.

The manual will need a clutch in 75 to 100K. If you speed shift, the sliders and synchros may fail sooner.

Clutch replacement $1000 or so.

CVT should go 100 to 150K. Hydraulics or belt will be what fails.

Entire tranny gets replaced. $7000 or so.

Do you prefer a manual or automatic ? Do you plan to chip ( CVT has 230lb ft torque limit ) ? How long do you plan to own the car ?

Answer those, and you know which you should get.

Default An article in European Car a while back...

quoted an Audi engineer who said the CVT should last "well beyond the life of the car" or words to that effect. Very simple and durable design.

Are you saying that the CVT can't be chipped?

Default People are forgetting the electronics that makes the any auto trans work...

My B-in-law just spent $800 fixing the chip that controls all the auto trans. Damn thing got stuck in 2nd gear and would not shift higher...

That was on a passat, but you never know...
