Milltek vs AWE exhaust - first impressions
This weekend I had my AWE exhaust removed and replaced with a Milltek. My installer took a bunch of pics and I'll post them when I get a copy.
Here are my initial impression if you care to know:
Sound: The Milltek heard from outside the car is a much deeper, bassier tone than the AWE. With the car idling I can hear the Milltek from 15 feet away while the AWE wouldn't be as audible.
Inside the car there is a big difference. The Milltek is much quieter. There is no deceleration drone when you lift your foot off the gas and start coasting unlike the AWE.
This is not to say there isn't any drone with the Milltek. I took the car up hills and coasted on the highway and at 2600 to 3000rpm there is still a bit of drone but I'd say only 1/4 the volume of the AWE in the same situations.
Under WOT the Milltek isn't very loud and I can hear the turbo spool and DV noises very clearly. With the AWE you can hear the exhaust howl as you fly down the road. This is something I do miss.
Performance: Normal city driving and highway crusing I felt no difference in performance of the car.
Under WOT trying to get to 180kph (110mph) which ended in 4th gear @ 6000rpm the Milltek loses to the AWE.
The larger piping of the AWE does show its performance in the acceleration of the vehicle. When I had the AWE system I can work through the gears and the car pulls and pulls until I let off at 6000rpm.
With the Milltek the car feels a bit more laboured in the 4500-6000rpm section. Going from 120kph to 180kph was noticably longer than with the AWE.
I've only given the exhaust a few hundred km to burn in so far and I'm going to heat it up in a few more hours and post more info when I get the pictures up.
