I use Meguiar Paint Cleaner for light swirl marks and Scratch X for deeper scratches...
The Paint Cleaner removes most light swirl marks pretty well and easily. Some deeper swirl marks or scratches will remain though and I use Scratch X to remove them.
I think the basic Meguiar products are quite "Beginner Friendly" and unlikely to do damages to the paintwork. From what I have read, clay products are very good and effective in removing swirl marks and scratches. I have never tried it (may be next time) but according to many experts, you have to be careful when using it or else... potential paint damages.
After you remove the swirls, use good polish and wax to enhance the shine and protect. I would not recommend Mequiar liquid wax products because they don't last and need to be reapplied after 3-4 car washes. However, they are very easy to apply, no buff marks and the results are really good.
