New A4 Owner has some questions, mostly audio

uh, what?
<i>"If you are going with an after-market head unit, bear in mind that you can still use the factory shark fin for both satellite radio and GPS."</i>
I have NEVER heard this. Where did you hear that?

Re: uh, what?
<center><img src="http://www.whnet.com/4x4/radio/FAKRA.jpg"></center><p>I don't remember specifically where I heard this, but it was one or more of the Audi/VW forums/DIY sites. It took several nights of searching and reading to find any real info on this and ultimately no one would commit to 'yes', but I figured what the hell-theoretically, it should work. So I plugged it in and seconds later, Sirius goodness! The aftermarket Sirius only used one of the two FAKRA connectors in the trunk (green, I believe). For a 'factory Sirius' install, both are used I believe.
For my aftermarket Sirius install, I found that the antenna connector fit into the Audi FAKRA connector perfectly and I ended up cutting one off an old Sirius antenna and carefully spliced it into my situation.
There was only FAKRA connector for the GPS (blue) so that was easy. I could have purchased the actual cable from Audi, but again, I made my own with an old Sirius connector and coax cable.
I am currently using a Kenwood DNX-5120 with Sirius and GPS using my factory shark fin. Took a while to get it all figured out, but absolutely worth it to not have to deal with the two black warts for GPS/Sirius.

NO KIDDING!
that is the coolest thing I've read on the forums yet! How is the Sirius reception? How about the GPS signal? fairly accurate? quick to locate you?
Can you do a more detailed write up? I'd love to give it to my installer to follow.

Re: NO KIDDING!
Sirius and GPS reception are rock solid-full signal bars on both. GPS is very quick to acquire satellites from a cold start and almost instant from a warm boot.
As for a more detailed write-up, I will go out and shoot a few quick pix and put something together in the next few days.
I'm surprised this is not more common knowledge. I'm just happy to finally be able to ADD something to the collective knowledge pool-I feel like such a leech sometimes

If you compile a good write up, I'm going to bookmark it on my very SHORT list of cool things
I learn on AW.
Not to mention, I'm going to forward to all my car audio shops I do business with.
I wonder if it will work with more than just the Kenwood unit. I would imagine it would.
I have the shark fin, but no factory NAV. I wonder if the shark fin would still work as a GPS reciever.

I have an '04 A4 (B6) with a "shark fin". I put in an aftermakret Kenwood HU a few years ago and I want to add the Kenwood Sirius receiver.
I'm pretty sure that my car didni't come with an OEM SAT receiver because I tapped on the box in the trunk and it sounded hollow.
I want to make sure that if I take the time to remove the trunk liner, the green Sirius antenna wire will be there.
If the wire is there, is it an easy splice?
Did anyone post photos of a similar job?
