Could be cleaning up the leftover gunk...but I would want to verify the new filter by eye. Do it.

eh typically a new filter will clean up the oil pretty good, that black oil might be old filter

Default a followup..

The shop swears this was new oil(and I believe them). I just got this car and now I'm a tad worried that the previous owners didn't change their oil often enough. I guess regular oil changes start with me.

Did you look at the filter to determine if it's new? Can't wait forever to do that or you can't tell

Default IMO, that oil looks too dark for being recently changed. If it was me, I would do an oil/filter

change as soon as I could to ease my mind and to see if my oil change looks the same after 50 miles. The pic you posted just doesn't look right to me. Another oil/filter change is not gonna break the bank.

If your pic is 1/2 quart, then all the remaining oil looks the same. You're sure its your engine oil and not your tranny oil you drained?

Did they say anything about the over-filling?

Default If he can drain 1/2q, he can just drain the whole thing, filter or not. I'd run it 500-1000 mi to...

clean even a lil more. Without knowing what the filter is like, hard to know why the oil is like that.

Default They said the bigger filters require more oil..

and that the old dipsticks don't take into account the bigger filter
