Default the logic here didn't make sense to me either...

I'm no physicist...but a larger filter will maybe cause the overall oil change to need more oil..but the oil level should never change...right? Well I don't know what to say...this shop has been in the audi scene for a while in Oregon/Washington.

Default Audi/VW shop does not necessarily equal good service. Fundamental nature of mechanics = scammers.

Is it prefered to obtain of services of someone "specializing" in VWs, yeah. Does that insure brilliant service? Nope. They probally thought you were wasting their time by asking a bunch of questions rather than kissing their asses in wonder/amazment. Look for a BOSCH Authourized Service Center and go from there, they have a shop locator on the intraweb.

Oil changes are a DIY for many reasons. Did you try accesing the filter from above by taking the 2 mounting screws from the coolant reservior and folding it back ono the hoses? The filter is right there and once you DIY it you can be sure not to overtighten it. fwiw, in a pinch or as general practice, draining the oil after 5k and leaving the filter for another 5k on works fine. You could however take the filter off and drain it to reuse another 5k. oem Audi filters say "2 years / 30,000km" on them.
btw- that Audi "dealer" Syntec 5w-40 is bunky oil. Local Wal Marts haz at least 4-5 other oils that would be better and cheaper too.
