Default Do not worry- use the 0w-40 if using M1.

I would not use the 15w-50 in my 1.8T. This is not a place to cut cost IMHO.

It shears in a turbo. It's really just thickened Mobil 1 0w-30.

Default Just use it to thicken-up some thin-*** Mobil 1 5w-30, preferably the new EP. 1:1 should do it.

It's totally normal to mix for desired viscosity. Mobil says it ok to mix from the SuperSyn line. This calculator is handy for dertermining the final visc, I will check it for you.

Ok, looks like it's 13.4 cSt @+100c, a light 40 weight. German Syntec 0w-30 is 12.1 for reference. Higher summer oil temps = thinning of oil. IMO, with the $20 Jugs of Mobil 1 (esp 5w-40 SUV) it's not worth dealing with clearance oil. In summer, you don't have to worry about the "W" winter ratings, but in cold, you want to stick with 0w or 5w synthetics. If you want to exchange some 15w-50, I would not blame you if you have a lot. Mixing with the 5w-30 *EP* would give you a very good oil indeed, probally ok for 10k. BTW- I got 100q of Mobil 1 for $1/q. Most was 0w-40 and 0w-30 but I returned everything else for $ and more in-grade oil. I am mixing the remaining 0w-30 and 0w-40 to get a 12-13cSt oil.

Almost all oil specs are here: cSt is the unit for viscosity, not SAE range from the bottle like most people use.

Default No. All that is needed in a stock/chipped 1.8t is about a mid-30 weight. There are additives that...

protect the metal form contacting after the oil film had broken down. They are Extreme Pressure or "EP" additives. "Boundry Protection" is another term for this class of EP and AW (anti-wear) additives.
