Default Opinions and experience wanted - 2002 B6 A4 1.8t

B6 guys,

Looking at a 2002 Black/black A4 1.8T 5-speed quattro for my wife. As of now I'm a full blown BMW sellout, but not a stranger to Audi's (UrS4, 90, A6, 5000, etc)... what specifically should I be looking for on a high miles B6?

The car has 91k on it, and no record of a timing belt, I've already let them know that needs to be done before we'd buy it. What else is problematic to be aware of?

Also, they asking $12,900. It sounds ok to me in general, but is it really a decent price for a car with 91k? In my previous experience with Audi's, mileage isn't a big deal if it's in good shape. I think we'd be offering around 11k, pending condition.

Any thoughts, concerns, comments are much appreciated.

Default The rear coolant flange will eventually start leaking. Breather hose will leak. Vacuum lines will

need replacement.

None of these issues are life threatening. I have done all of them myself.

The breather is the hose that connects to the valve cover. It deteriorates from inside.

The rear coolant flange is below the breather hose. It is connected to the rear of the head. It will start leaking coolant and need to be replaced. It's not hard, but it is an annoying DIY.

Finally - check for sludge. Look in the oil cap for any sludge signs. If you can, have a mechanic pre-inspect it by pulling the valve cover. It should cost about an hour of labor.

Default Good ol' leatherette lol, coil packs and you already called the timing belt...

I think thewre was a ball joint or cv joint recall before too, also oil sludge if previous owner/s didn't change oil regulalrly. Those are the common problems as long as regularly scheduled maintainence was done. If it wasn't then you don't know what to expect.

That car is extremely cleen though, gotta love black

Default Good stuff, thank you. I would be having a Audi mechanic/friend check it over well.

I also don't mind a few DIY's, I do most stuff myself now anyways.

Default Yea, leatherette is kind of weak sauce... we're partially doing this to get a car the dog can ride.

I assume leatherette is reasonably tough, and cheaper to find a new rear seat if the dog screws it up? =P

Default there's a recall on the breather hose btw

so if it hasnt been replaced, the dealer should do it for free. Oh, and I've been lurking over on NCeuro.org for a while...
