Roof Rack on Avant ????

You need "feet" and crossbars.. (more)
The "feet" will attach to the roof rails and the crossbars fit through them. Then, its just a matter of adding the accessories from there.
I got a Thule and think its great. Others have Yakimas and sounds like they work just as well. I know Thule has several different kinds of feet. I bought the ones that allow you to customize the crossbar length - then I cut them to minimize the over-hang on the outside of the feet (looks more stearmlined to the car and has more of a custom fit).

I don't have pics (just got a digicam this week) but...
I know there are a few guys on the forum with them on their Avants. And YES, there absolutely are aftermarket racks, in fact, I think Thule might be the OEM supplier for some of Audi's racks. Mine fits perfectly and is very easy to attach. It has soft rubber pads that grip the roof rails tight and prevents scratching. The other reason I bought aftermarket was the choice of accessories for the rack - when you go with an aftermarket rack, they tend to have more options.
Not to mention, they cost less than an Audi rack.
This is Thule's site:

It has pretty good info on what rack will fit your car.
The other site I would check out is Rack Attack (that's where I got mine from):
