Check for reliability on the web
I've heard that there have been reliability issues and so BMW have upped the warranty to 100, 000 miles. I've heard of blown engines as well but didn't believe it untill I saw used ones for sale with replacement engines. Do your research.

Both great cars, but 1 is a 2 door rear wheel and the other is a 4 door quattro, it (read on)
depends on where you live. I live in NJ, my neighbor has a '02 M3 Gun Metal Gray awesome car no doubt about it. But, during all the snow this year it sat in the garage while he drove his '03 Accord, while I was enjoying the snow in my A4. It also depends on how many people you usually carry in your car. Ultimatley, it depends on price, M3 around here sell for $60k, hopefully the S4 will be less.
Good luck.

Bimmer SMG or Audi Tiptronic right? =) I think SMG is cooler... (more)
There's that secret sequence you enter on the controls to activate the crazy clutch drop peel-out launches (that is only good for a few runs).
The S4 Tip will be delayed a few months after 6-speed manual is released... and I'm sure the SMG is more exciting (see above). =)
I read a Car Magazine (U.K.) review and they seem to think that the M3 is still the king of pure "luxury sport"... a beast that wants you to drive it on the edge and just begs to have the "snot" driven out of it.
The S4 is more sensible (4 door and Avant options of course)... and I'd say safer for adverse weather.
Tranny, Bimmer wins
All-out sportiness, Bimmer wins
Practicality, Audi wins
Safety (quattro benefits), Audi wins
Value... depends on what you value =)
M3 probably has more "bling" factor and Bimmer still has more cachet with the "status seeking" public =).
