Which short shifter is better Neuspeed or AMS?
#2
Toss up there...
...Neuspeed is cheaper...by a fair amount ($204 with free shipping from Greedspeed), however AMS offers an adjustable height. Either one are a good bet. Search the archives, you won't find too many bad comments about either. I'm putting my Neuspeed SS in tonight, so I can't speak for install, but most put it at a 4 or so on a scale of 1-10...not too bad if you're at all mechanically inclined!

AMS
I'm very pleased with my AMS. The build quality and materials are top-notch. It has height and throw adjustability. Plus, you can use either a slotted **** (i.e. OEM) or a threaded ****.
Installation is fairly easy. The instructions that come with the AMS shifter explain everything very well. Just make sure you have the appropriate tools (i.e. socket extension and circlip pliers). It also wouldn't hurt to get the stereo removal keys from Clairparts or your dealer as some people have had trouble getting the ashtray to go back into place.
I can't comment on the Neuspeed. But I don't regret spending the extra dough for the AMS! The versatility of the AMS makes it worth it. If you're concerned about voiding the warranty, you can simply lift up the shift boot, loosen the height adjusting nut and lenghten the height to mimic the stock height of the shifter when you go in for service.

AMS; adjustable throw and height (plus multi use end for different shift *****).
I think the AMS feels more OEM - just shorter and better. The Neuspeed SS feels very short, stiff, notchy and forward (as in gear positions feel more forward then OEM). With the AMS, you can "dial in" the throw and height you want. I know someone else who had the Neuspeed SS in their A4 and switched to the AMS SS and was very pleased.

Install isn't too bad...but...
Be sure to look over the various directions (especially the one from Stratmosphere.com). I had some trials and tribulations while installing it, and here's a few tips:
1) Ball-head allen wrench (preferably T-handle)--very very useful for getting that 2nd hex bolt out of the lower shifter rod. That 2nd hex bolt feels like it's made of a softer metal and is easy to strip the head!
2) You can remove the ashtray--which makes getting to that 2nd hex bolt much MUCH easier, but getting the ashtray out (and back in) is a major PITA, and what I actually spent most of my time doing
3) Circlip pliers are a must
Good luck...
